Another day, another Windows 10 tip. Who doesn’t like Windows 10? This release makes Microsoft seem as if they had finally found the right combination between the flat style UI and the traditional familiarity of Windows. However, just like all kinds of software, bug is still present, and one of them, is the missing texts of system UI. What do I mean? Well, head past the break to find out more. In fact, I’ll also give you a tip on how to solve that annoying bug.

See the picture above? That’s exactly what I meant. All the application names are gone, even the ones that are supposed to appear in the live tiles. What’s worse is that it doesn’t happen to just the apps, but also the system as well. See the picture on the left? Yeah, the system is supposed to tell us to input the password of a certain wireless network, but you can’t tell which network it is, can you?
Okay, enough about the problem. I’ll just head straight to the solution. According to the Internet, this seems to happen on a small percentage of devices, which is running on an old, underpowered processor such as Atom’s Z2760 processor running in my Iconia W510. Unfortunately, the driver is certainly outdated, dated back at 2013 and Acer doesn’t seem to bother updating it. If you encounter this problem, it might be wise for you to try updating your drivers first, especially graphics driver.
*)Disclaimer: Though I said that my Iconia had this problem, I demoed this solution through my PC. Thus, the graphics card is nVidia while the Iconia uses Intel’s on-board graphics card.
Anyway, here’s the solution I used:
- Go to Device Manager. You can either search it in the Start menu or go to Control Panel -> Devices and Printers -> Device Manager.
- From the Device Manager window, select Display Adapter. You’ll see that whatever graphics card is powering your device. Double-click that, and a small window should appear. Navigate to “Drivers” tab so the window matches the picture below.
The Graphics Adapter Properties - Click “Update Driver”.
- Click “Browse my computer for driver software”.
- Click “Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer”. It will trigger the following window:
A selection of drivers (ever) installed in your computer. - Select “Microsoft Basic Display Adapter”, then click “Next”. Your computer then will install the selected adapter and will restart. This problem should be gone after the restart. Well, at least mine did.
- Try executing “sfc /scannow” (without quotes) in the Command Prompt while in Administrator mode.
- Try restarting your device. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.
- As a last resort (I certainly hope you don’t have to do this…), you might want to refresh, reset, or even reinstall your device.
